O-ring simply refers to a classic circular ring shape, which exists purely to create a better and less leakproof seal between two other parts, and usually aims to prevent accidental leakage of gas or liquid. In this sense, they are actually a form of gasket-the main difference is that O-ring seals are more commonly used in very high pressure environment, while ordinary cork, paper or rubber gaskets may easily fail.
In very basic terms, O-ring seals work by being placed in a groove or channel between two surfaces/components that will mate or push together. O-rings, usually made of some kind of elastomer, are installed at the joint between these two parts and are being compressed to help form a tight seal.
The greater the internal pressure on this joint, the more serious the deformation of O-ring in its groove, which can improve its overall sealing force, but when it exceeds a certain pressure or bears a more dynamic working load, it will lead to the failure of the seal. It is necessary to pay attention to balance in the selection of O-ring material, size and working environment to meet the required functional requirements.
